It’s sad to think that children are spending half as much time outdoors as they did 20 years ago. I remember when I was a child, all we did was play outside! We used to go outside after lunch time and play outside until the sun was setting or until my mom would call us for dinner. We never really spent a lot of time watching TV or playing on video games or tablets. Now, I hardly see children playing outside and the ones I do see are all noses down in their smartphones.
This summer, TruGreen is on a mission to encourage others to spend less time inside and more time outside creating memories with their loved ones.
Did you know that children who play outside are more physically active, more creative in their play, less aggressive and show better concentration. (Burdette and Whitaker, 2005; Ginsburg et al., 2007) In addition, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, sixty minutes of daily unstructured free play is essential to children’s physical and mental health. (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2008)
I honestly try my best to get Zach outside to play for at least an hour or two each day especially during the summer when he doesn’t have school. Now that summer has come and gone so fast, I often wonder if we spent enough time outdoors making memories and having our own adventures. Although we still have a few weeks left of summer, I can say that I’m impressed with how much time we spent outside as a family.
We’ve played countless times in our backyard with the sprinklers, bubbles, and had so many BBQs. We’ve gone to the water park and splash pad quite a number of times and even recently spent the entire day at Michigan’s Adventure. Every night before sunset, we go walking around the neighborhood for at least an hour and have spent our most recent weekends at the lake. It’s been really great and I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors with my family before the start of the school year.
My family and I enjoy living life outside, does yours?
