2014 Mazda CX-9
I will never forget the day I met the Mazda CX-9.
It cleaned up pretty nicely and was waiting for me on my doorstep driveway.
It arrived in a beautiful baby blue color that I just fell in love with. It looked extremely sleek and classy and very much like a luxury car with the aspects I look for in a family car.
A perfect combination for me and what I'm looking for when I purchase a car in the future.
I opened the backseat door to find a perfectly clean backseat that can fit 3 people and when I looked in the back I discovered that there was 3rd row seating in this car as well, for two people. The black leather seats gave a nice luxurious detail to the overall appearance of the car that I thought was beautiful.
I almost didn't want to sit on them!
What was nice about the back row was that your passengers can adjust their preferred temperature and heating system to their liking, making it a very customizable (and comfortable) experience for them. I know that during the summer I prefer to adjust the cooling system to my liking because too much A/C can give me a headache. Likewise during the Winter, too much heat beaming on me can make me very uncomfortable. So I think this option is nice for your passengers. You don't want angry passengers, trust me.
Another thing I liked about the Mazda CX-9 is that if only two passengers are riding in the back (instead of 3) you can easily fold down the cup holders to give your passengers more room and comfort. There is room for two cups and then you can also open up an extra storage area where you can put snacks or maybe your phone while you're on the road. I've never seen the cup holder area have a mini storage place like this, so I thought that was nice. It's also covered in the same leather as the seats, so it makes it easier to blend in when it's in the upright position.
I really can't get over the color of this car. It is so pretty. I feel like if I bought a car, it would have to be this color. It's just very appealing to the eye. I think the Mazda CX-9 is a great family car if you have a large family like me. You can seat up to 7 passengers in this car! There is also a lot of leg room too, so don't think you will all be crammed. It's very spacious to make your road trips much more enjoyable.
The steering wheel had a nice leather finish to it and like the other cars I've reviewed in the pass, there are some neat features as well. I really love that the newer models are coming out with these features because it makes it less distracting and allows you to focus more on the road when you can control various aspects of the car right from your steering wheel! If you set up bluetooth connectivity, you can easily stream your music and adjust the volume, make phone calls, change the channels and navigate the display area all with the touch of a button, without ever taking your eyes off the road.
Between you and your passenger, you will find one of my favorite things about this car– the raised armrest. The armrest was so raised that I felt like was sitting on a fancy chair, just chilling, not worrying about a thing. It sounds strange that this was one of my favorite features, but what can I say! I guess you'd have to see it for yourself. It provided such a fresh touch to this car and within the arm rest you'll find a lot of storage as well. You can open the actual armrest for storage and a couple of USB outlets and then right below the gear shift you'll find a little storage area that folds out where you can put things like your sunglasses and phone. Super handy.
Next you'll see the display area where you can find a variety of standard options here. You have your display for your navigation, audio, phone, etc. Buttons for the volume control, the heating and cooling system, your heated seat options and an outlet for your car charger. I was very excited for the heated seats option because it was very useful to me during the Winter. You have two levels for your heated seats, which is nice. Your passenger can also enjoy the heated seat as well.
I wasn't too fond of the display though. I felt that with how luxurious this car was that the display was just too small. I felt like it could've been a lot bigger. My favorite display by far was in the Kia Soul Exclaim, and I think the Mazda CX-9 display could've been a little better. It is a touch screen, which I appreciate however there was definitely some lag time when I was using it. I definitely got used to it over the week, but that was just something I needed to point out.
The Mazda CX-9 also features blind spot monitoring which alerts you if a vehicle or object is in one of your blind spots. If you have your signal on to make a turn or switch lanes and there is a vehicle there, it will actually start beeping at you so you don't turn. This is a very helpful feature, but like I said in my other reviews please don't just rely on this feature while you drive. Make sure to ALWAYS check your blind spot when driving! It is so important.
Trying to get your passengers in the 3rd row can always be a time-consuming hassle, but with the Mazda CX-9 it is so much easier! It comes with a handle on both sides of the 2nd row seats where you can pull to move the seats upward. This allows you to easily get your passengers in the 3rd row with ease. If your 3rd row passengers need more leg room, you can also use this option to scoot the 2nd row seat upward to give them more room that way as well. The 2nd row seats fold down completely too if you are looking to use that option for storage purposes.
The 3rd row seating also folds down for added storage as well. This was super useful to me when my sister and I went on huge shopping trips to the warehouse to stock up on groceries and supplies for my family. It gave us SO much room and I love that. You can choose to fold down one seat, both seats, the entire 2nd row, whatever you need to make it easier for you to use the Mazda CX-9 as a storage machine when you're on-the-go. It's pretty amazing.
Since I knew I would be testing this car out in the snow, I was excited to learn that it was an all-wheel drive. Basically amazing in the snow. I have never driven a car before that behaved so well during the Winter. We have horrible Winters here in Michigan, and I felt very safe driving this car in the snow. I didn't slide around the road at all and I could rest assure knowing that my son would also be safe in this car too.
If you're a horrible at reversing cars like me, then you'll be happy knowing that the Mazda CX-9 has a rearview camera and rear backup sensors to help detect objects behind the car when it's in reverse. I can't tell you how paranoid I am that I will accidentally hit something when backing up, so this option is great for me. It will also alert you when a car approaches you from the side when you're backing out of a parking space or driveway. This was SO useful.
My best friend Eire actually came out to visit me that week and on one of the days, we actually got snowed in. I wish I took pictures sooner, but this was after I tried clearing away the car after the storm. There was so much snow. It was intense! I took me a good half hour just to get the snow off the car. We changed plans and ended up putting the heated seats on, jammed out to some music, and managed to get the car out so we can go get some dessert.
I miss the Mazda CX-9 already. It was truly one of my favorite cars to drive. I think if I had to pick a car to purchase right now, this would be it. It has all of the features I appreciate and look for in a family car. It has great safety features, storage, leg room, convenience, great design– everything I want in car. It's so versatile, too which I think parents can appreciate as well.
What is your favorite feature of the Mazda CX-9?
