Is Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Worth Watching?

We received tickets for a prescreening in exchange for our review. All opinions are my own.

If you are seasoned with the BBC show, Absolutely Fabulous, then you are going to love Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. It stars Edina (played by Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (played by Joanna Lumley) who are now in their 60s. Edina is still running her PR agency which has lost interest and is quickly running of out money. They realize that Edina needs a miracle to save her company and her reputation and so they begin their journey.

My friend Hayat and I had the chance to go to the prescreening for Absolutely Fabulous courtesy of my sister Aly. Although it was a comedy, I would rank it as a chuckle on the laughter scale. I love comedies and it is very hard to make me laugh. There were a couple of moments that actually made me laugh out loud but throughout most of the movie I smiled and chuckled more than anything else.

The movie was witty, which I enjoyed. It had a lot of funny references to other movies, shows, and celebrities and witty one-liners, but if you didn’t understand the reference or know the shows it was referring to then the humor was lost in translation. Some of those references we didn’t really understand because they were geared more towards a little older crowd. The older movie goers appeared to really enjoy the humor of the movie as evident by the loud laughing throughout.

I think those that would really enjoy this movie would be people who were already fans of the show Absolutely Fabulous. It is almost like a continuation of the show and follows their life almost like a “where are they now” feature. The scene with Kate Moss was pretty funny, but you’ll have to watch it to know what I’m talking about.

Overall, it is not a movie I would pay to watch or recommend to my friends; but we did enjoy the witty humor. I would watch it again if it was available on Netflix or another streaming service.
